Pamper Yourself and Stick to Your Beliefs, Too!

Posted by Jena Mazzio on 6/30/2011 to Aromatherapy Herbs & Essential Oils
C’mom…admit it… there’s nothing quite like a relaxing massage or soothing facial to pick you up when you’re feeling down or to kick up your self esteem just a notch. There’s just something about treating yourself that makes you go ‘ahhhhhh…’ and makes you wonder why you don’t indulge in this little luxury more often!

If you’re a vegan, or a consumer of cruelty-free products, it’s definitely possible to indulge in spa treatments without sacrificing your beliefs! With the increase in demand for natural, organic, vegan and cruelty-free skincare products and services, finding a spa that shares the same beliefs as you isn’t hard – but it may take a little extra work on your part. Here are some guidelines to help you find your perfect spa escape:

Just ask. Contact spas in your area to see if they use vegan and/or cruelty-free products on their clients. You may be in luck – they may already use these guilt-free products. If they don’t, ask if they’d be able to modify any of the treatments for you (e.g., taking the honey component out of a body scrub) or if you’d have the option to bring in your own products so you know exactly what will be going on your skin. Also, if they don’t offer vegan products and services, be sure to encourage them to do so. If there’s a big demand for it, they’ll likely take it into consideration.

Use online resources. is a helpful tool to research spas around the world. Just type “vegan” and your zipcode into the search boxes to see what facilities around you offer vegan services. also has listings for vegan spas in the US. If all else fails, Googling ‘vegan spas’ along with your city or state can point you in the right direction. You may be surprised at just how many exclusively vegan facilities there are!

Follow your favorite brands. There are many vegan and cruelty-free brands on the market and most of them are happy to shout it from the rooftops! If you’ve got a favorite brand, check out their website. Many will tell you what spas in your area use their products. Better yet, some of the larger companies have their own signature spa locations, which takes away all of the guesswork.

Ask around. Are you on vegan forums? Twitter? Facebook? Ask other users if they know of places in your area that can offer you a great vegan spa treatment. More than likely, they’ll be happy to share their experiences with you. A little research on your part can help you create your perfect spa experience. And, knowing that you’re not contributing to practices that are incongruent to your beliefs will make that spa treatment feel that much better! Go ahead… treat yourself!
